Absolace is a progressive rock outfit from the sandy country of Dubai. They claimed to be influenced by bands like Porcupine Tree, Karnivool and Tool. An interesting trio to say the least. Let’s see how those influences are reflected on “Fractals”, the second album by these progressive desert dwellers…

It took some time to before the album opened up to me, but I got to admit that Fractals is quite an entertaining prog nugget. This outfit isn’t afraid to reveal their sources of inspiration either. Tool is the premier influence on “The Rise”, “Dichotomy” and “Alpha Omega”. Steve Wilson and Co left their marks on “Chroma Mera”, “Shape And Form” and “The Fall”. “Sirens” could easily be included on Anathema’s “We’re Here Because We’re Here”. Aussie prog rockers Karnivool shine through in the arrangements and the song orientated approach of this album.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with showing your influences, but it does indicate that Absolace are still looking for their own specific niche. With that out of the way I must say that these guys know how to write engaging compositions with lots of depth. They also managed to stay clear from the most notorious pitfall in progressive rock and metal, namely pointless guitar and keyboard solos. Technical prowess is used to enhance the song material and that’s always a plus in my book.

“Fractals” is graced with a crisp production, however a little more punch in the lower ends would have given the album just a little extra power.

“Fractals” is very enjoyable release by any stretch of the imagination. The Absolace guys know how play their instruments and how to write memorable songs. However, a little less Tool and Porcupine Tree worship on the next album would be greatly appreciated by yours truly…
